Early Life and Education

Ryan Lewis was born on March 25, 1988 in Spokane, Washington to Julie and Scott. He has two older sisters named Teresa and Laura. Lewis got into music at an early age, playing guitar in various rock bands with his best friend Ryan Sanson. As a teenager, he went to Ferris High School in Spokane before transferring to Roosevelt High School in Seattle. Lewis went on to attend the University of Washington.

Career Beginnings 

Lewis began his professional career as a photographer and videographer. In 2008, he released his debut EP, "Instrumentals," featuring four alternative hip hop songs. Also that year, Lewis collaborated on an album with the artist Symmetry.

While working as a photographer, Lewis met rapper Macklemore in 2006. The pair became good friends, and in 2008 Lewis produced Macklemore's mixtape "The Unplanned." In 2009, they officially became the music duo known as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Subsequently, they released their debut EP, "The VS. EP." The pair went on to release their debut single, "My Oh My," in late 2010. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had their commercial breakthrough two years later with their debut studio album, "The Heist," which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
