Joseph Fiennes was born Joseph Alberic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes on May 27, 1970, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He is the son of writer Jennifer Lash and farmer/photographer Mark Fiennes, and he has five older siblings, Ralph, Martha, Sophie, Magnus, and Jacob (Joseph's fraternal twin). Ralph Fiennes is a Tony-winning and Oscar-nominated actor, Martha and Sophie are directors, Magnus is a composer, and Jacob is a conservationist. Fiennes also has a foster brother, Michael Emery, who is an archaeologist. Joseph briefly attended school in the Republic of Ireland, then he studied at Swan School For Boys and Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury. Joseph spent a year at an art school in Suffolk before he joined the Young Vic Youth Theatre in London. He graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1993.
