Early Life and Career Beginnings
Alani Nicole Vázquez was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 25, 1979. She is best known by the nickname La La, and uses her husband's last name Anthony. She describes herself as Afro-Puerto Rican, and both of her parents are of Puerto Rican heritage. She is the eldest of four children, with one younger brother and two younger sisters. When she was just fifteen years old, La La landed an internship at the radio station WHAT-FM, HOT 97.5. After her internship ended, while she was still a high school student, La La was given her own show. Her co-host was rapper Ludacris, and the show was called "Future Flavas". She then attended Howard University and studied communications during her time there, but ultimately did not graduate from college.
Career
Instead of finishing college, when she was nineteen La La took a job at 92.3 The Beat in Los Angeles, where she was given the opportunity to co-host her own radio show, "The B-Syde". She enjoyed a very successful radio career before leaving the station in 2001 to begin working at MTV. Her lack of previous television experience did not hold her back at all, and she quickly became a co-host of two of MTV's most popular shows, "Direct Effect" (2002-2006) and "Total Request Live" (2002).
La La was able to parlay her MTV experience into a successful career as a host for various VH1 reality shows. The shows she has hosted include "The Real World: Paris" (2003), "Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Inferno" (2004), "Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Battle of the Sexes 2" (2005), "Flavor of Love" (2006), "Flavor of Love 2" (2006), "I Love New Work" (2007), "Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School" (2007), "For the Love of Ray J" (2009), "Real Chance of Love" (2009), "Charm School with Ricki Lake" (2009), "and "For the Love of Ray J 2" (2010). Additionally, her popularity helped her land her own reality shows. The series "La La's Full Court Wedding" (2010) documented the planning process leading up to her wedding to Carmelo Anthony, as well as the actual ceremony itself. It inspired a spinoff, "La La's Full Court Life", which aired for five seasons from 2011 to 2014, and followed the wedded couple through their daily life.
In 2003, La La launched her own production company, Krossover Productions. One of the company's more notable projects is the Mike Tyson documentary "Tyson" (2008), which La La served as a producer for. It was directed by Oscar-nominated director James Toback, and actually won the Regard Knockout Award.
La La had previously first ventured into the world of acting in 2001, when she made her film debut in the romantic comedy "Two Can Play That Game" (2001). She went on to appear in television shows such as "Sex and the City" (2003), "Monster Island" (2004), "You Got Served" (2004), One on One" (2004), "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" (2013). "Power" (2014-2020), "Unforgettable" (2015), "Daytime Divas" (2017), "Star" (2018), "BH90210" (2019), and "The Chi" (2020). She took a long hiatus from acting in major films before returning in 2012 with the film "Think Like a Man", alongside co-stars Gabrielle Union and Taraji P. Henson. Other films she has appeared in include "Baggage Claim" (2013), "1982" (2013), "Think Like a Man Too" (2014), "Chi-Raq" (2015), "Destined" (2017), "Double Play" (2017), and "Deuces" (2017). In addition to her on-screen acting, La La has also acted in stage productions. Her stage debut came in October 2011, in the off-Broadway production of "Love Loss and What I Wore". She has also appeared in music videos, including for the song "In My Feelings" (2018) by Drake and "Hot Girl Summer" (2019) by Megan Thee Stallion.
La La is not just known for her appearances on screen, she is also a published author. She has released two books, "The Love Playbook" (2014) and "The Power Playbook" (2015), in which she shares some of her secrets behind finding love and success.
Entrepreneurial Ventures
In 2012, La La launched her own cosmetic line, MOTIVES by La La, at the Market America World Conference in Miami, Florida. The line was inspired by her vision to create cosmetic products for women of color, and featured products for the face, cheeks, eyes, lips, and nails. The following year, La La launched her own clothing line, 5th and Mercer. It was a capsule collection exclusively available on Shopbop.com. This is not her only clothing line; in October 2019 La La launched the clothing line La La Anthony Collection.
