In the mid-1990s, Campbell moved to Los Angeles to pursue a gospel music career. In Los Angeles, he served as the music director and drummer for a number of high-profile artists, including Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and 98 Degrees, and also toured and performed with such artists as Stevie Wonder, Kelly Clarkson, Rod Stewart, and The Backstreet Boys. He is most widely recognized as the drummer for seven seasons of "American Idol," as well as the drummer for the house band on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on NBC. He has performed for a number of live television events, including "The Kennedy Center Honors," VH1's "Divas Live," VH1's "Diva Duets," the Grammy Awards, and "America's Got Talent." He is married to Tina Atkins Campbell, one half of the Grammy-winning gospel duo Mary Mary, and can be seen on the reality series "Mary Mary" on WE TV. The couple has four children together and one daughter from a previous relationship.

Early Life

Campbell was born on February 24, 1975, in Chicago, Illinois. His love of music began as a child, as he started drumming on his mother's dishes at the age of three. His family was also involved in the Chicago Gospel music scene, and Campbell attended Christian Youth M.B. of Chicago. It was there that he first performed on the drums at the age of four years old.

Career

Campbell moved to California at the age of 23 in 1998 in order to pursue a career in music. He eventually started booking gigs with artists and bands who needed drummers. His drumming talent and general music ability allowed him to begin booking more and more prominent kids with higher-profile artists. He worked as the musical director and drummer for major pop stars like Britney Spears and 98 Degrees. He has also worked with Kelly Price, Mary Mary, Rod Stewart, and Kelly Clarkson, among others. Additionally, he has toured as a drummer for artists like Backstreet Boys, Queen Latifah, and Christina Aguilera.

Campbell has also worked as the in-house drummer for The Image Awards, VH1 Disco Ball, the BET Awards, The Billboard Awards, and VH1 Save the Music Concert, among many others. He has also played on film scores for movies like "Dreamgirls," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," "Pitch Perfect 3," and "American Sniper," among others.

He also was able to land very consistent work as a drummer on FOX's singing talent competition, "American Idol." He performed as a drummer on the show from 2004 until 2016. He also was the drummer and lead singer on the final three seasons of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on NBC.

Outside of drumming, Campbell has also kept to his Gospel roots. He co-founded the Gospel group, The Soul Seekers, in 2000. The group began rather spontaneously after Campbell, as well as other band members, would improvise musical performances at the Greater Emmanuel Temple Church in Los Angeles. Over time, the performances became a tradition at the church, and the group performed there every year in a concert series called "Take Me Back Night. The membership of the group sometimes changes but generally consists of eight members, including Campbell, who performs as the lead vocalist.

Though the group was formed in 2000, they did not release their debut studio album until April 2005. The album, "The Soul Seekers," charted the Billboard Gospel Albums chart, taking the number 37 spot. The group won the 2006 Stellar Award for Quartet Group of the Year, one of the highest achievements a Gospel artist can receive. In 2010, the group released their second studio album, "Soul Seekers II," which charted in the number 11 spot. It also charted on the Heatseekers Albums chart in the number 12 position. It was also favorably reviewed by a number of Gospel music critics.

Personal Life

Together, they have had four children – Laiah, Meela, Theodore, and Santana. Campbell also has an eldest daughter, Cierra, who is from a previous relationship.
