Early Life

Wardell Stephen Curry Sr. was born on June 25, 1964, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was raised in Grattoes and played high school basketball at Fort Defiance. He was a star player, spending his free time practicing shooting in his coach's barn. All of his hard work paid off, as he went on to become the all-time leading scorer in the school's history. He was named a McDonald's All-American player in 1982. Additionally, Curry played high school baseball and won state championships in both sports. He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1982 Major League Baseball draft.

However, Curry opted to attend college instead and enrolled at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Curry played well throughout his college career and was named the Player of the Year in 1986 in the Metro Conference. He also played baseball at Virginia Tech and was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1986 MLB draft but decided to keep playing basketball instead. His successful career at Virginia Tech eventually led to his induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

Career

After completing school, Curry was selected with the 15th overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the 1986 NBA draft. He played one season for the Jazz before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1987. There, he played for the 1987-1988 season but was then left unprotected by Cleveland for the 1988 NBA expansion draft. He was the second player selected overall and the first selected by the Charlotte Hornets.

Curry then spent the next ten seasons in Charlotte. He primarily came off the bench to provide instant offense with three-point shooting. During his sixth season with the Hornets, he was honored by being named the Sixth Man of the Year, an NBA award given to a player who regularly comes off the bench as a substitute. At one point, he was the Hornets' all-time statistical leader in points, games played, three-pointers made and attempted, and three-pointer goal percentages. After he left the team following his final season in 1998, he was the only player remaining from his inaugural season ten years earlier.

Following his time in Charlotte, Curry played one season for the Milwaukee Bucks. He then was signed to the Toronto Raptors, where he spent his three final seasons with the NBA. Curry holds career averages of 11.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. He remains the all-time leading scorer in Hornets history with 9,839 points. Following his retirement, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Following his career playing professional basketball, Curry remained active in basketball. He was named an assistant coach of the Charlotte Bobcats but decided to step down before the season began in order to be able to attend his sons' basketball games. In 2009, he started working as a commentator for the Charlotte Bobcats. However, he primarily remained heavily involved in his sons' lives and the development of their future careers in basketball. He tried to attend all of his sons' basketball games throughout their high school and college careers.

Personal Life

Curry met his future wife, Sonya Adams, while at Virginia Tech. She noticed Curry while on a recruiting visit to the school, during which time she watched the men's basketball team practice. The two started dating and eventually married in 1988, two years into Curry's NBA career. The couple had three children together – Stephen, Seth, and Sydel. Both Stephen and Seth have gone on to have successful careers in the NBA. Stephen notably has had a very successful career as a point guard for the Golden State Warriors, while Seth plays for the Brooklyn Nets. Curry was very involved in the development of their basketball skills throughout their upbringing.

Curry and his wife founded the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in 1995. The school is a Montessori preschool in Huntersville, North Carolina. In 1998, Curry established the charitable foundation, the Dell Curry Foundation, a youth-oriented program in Charlotte, North Carolina. The foundation runs five different learning centers in the Charlotte area that provide educational training and drug abuse counseling.

On August 23, 2021, Curry and his wife announced that they would be getting a divorce after 33 years of marriage. In the divorce filings, both accused the other of infidelity during the marriage.
