Ryan Joseph Giggs was born on November 29, 1973, in Canton, Cardiff, Wales, to Danny Wilson, a professional rugby player, and Lynne Giggs. The family moved to Swinton, a town in Salford, Greater Manchester, when Danny switched from rugby union to rugby league for Swinton RLFC. The move was tough for Ryan as he was close to his grandparents in Cardiff, but he often returned to visit them.
Giggs joined the local team Deans FC, and the coach recommended Ryan to Manchester City, and he signed up to their School of Excellence. Giggs continued to play for Salford Boys who went on to reach the final of the Granada Schools Cup at Anfield in 1987. Giggs captained Salford to victory over their Blackburn counterparts and earned "man of the match." Ryan Giggs was observed regularly by local newsagent Harold Wood who spoke to Alex Ferguson. Ferguson sent a scout, and Giggs was offered a trial over the 1986 Christmas season.
