He threw a no-hitter for the Red Sox in 2002 and helped Boston win their first World Series championship in 86 years in 2004.

Early Life

Derek Christopher Lowe was born on June 1, 1973, in Dearborn, Michigan. He attended Edsel Ford High School where he was a four-sport letterman in baseball, golf, basketball, and soccer. He was an All-League honoree in all four sports and was a first-team all-state pick in basketball. Lowe committed to Eastern Michigan University on a basketball scholarship.

MLB Career

In the eighth round of the 1991 MLB Draft, Derek Lowe was selected by the Seattle Mariners, and he forwent his college scholarship. He played in the Minor Leagues through 1996. He was called up to the Majors in April of 1997, and went on to play for part of the season before being traded to the Boston Red Sox. He remained with the Red Sox through 2004, helping them to two World Series wins. He then began playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005, and remained with them through 2008. He then signed with the Atlanta Braves. He played moderately well for the team through 2011, and then signed with the Cleveland Indians briefly. In 2012, he began playing for the New York Yankees. He played one season with the Yankees, and started 2013 with the Texas Rangers. However, he announced his retirement in July of 2013.

Derek Lowe compiled a 176-157 record over his career to go with a 4.03 ERA, 1,722 strikeouts, and 86 saves. He was a two-time All-Star (2000, 2002), AL saves leader in 2000, NL wins leader in 2006, and is a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.

Contracts & Career Earnings

In January 2005, Lowe signed a four-year, $36 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. And in 2009, he agreed on a four-year, $60 million deal with the Atlanta Braves.

Personal Life

Derek Lowe was married to his wife, Trinka, for seven years, and the couple had three children together. Carolyn Hughes, who covered the Dodgers for Fox Sports West, was suspended amidst a pending investigation into a potential relationship between her and Lowe during his tenure with the team. Shortly after, Lowe filed for divorce from Trinka, and Hughes' husband filed for divorce. Carolyn ended her broadcasting career and she and Lowe continued their relationship. The two were married in December 2008.

Lowe, a survivor of squamous cell carcinoma, has joined many causes in the fight against cancer. He has worked with the Melanoma Foundation of New England, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, and The Prostate Cancer Foundation.

In 1997, Derek was charged with fourth-degree domestic violence by his girlfriend who claimed he struck her. He was released on $1,000 bond the next day but violated a no-contact order by returning to her home. Lowe entered counseling as a result. In April 2011, he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and an improper lane change after drag racing in Atlanta. Both the DUI and reckless driving charges were dismissed in May 2011, and Lowe entered a no contest plea to violating basic motor vehicle rules.

Real Estate

In 2009, around the time he began playing for the Braves, Derek paid $3.45 million for a 5,500 square foot mansion on one of Atlanta's most-desirable streets. He sold this home in 2012 for $2.8 million.

In 2006 Derek paid $730 thousand for a property in Fort Myers, Florida. Two years later he completed construction on an 8,000 square foot 5-bedroom mansion. He listed the mansion for sale in July 2017 for $4.5 million, ultimately accepting $2.85 million in June 2021.
