Calum Hood was born on January 25, 1996 in Mount Druitt, New South Wales, Australia to Joy and David. He is of Cook Island Māori descent through his mother, and of Scottish descent through his father. His older sister is singer-songwriter Mali-Koa. Hood was educated at Norwest Primary School and Norwest Christian College. Growing up, he was involved in sports, particularly football. However, Hood ultimately decided to devote his time to music, and in 2012 dropped out of high school to pursue his recording career.

With his school friends Michael Clifford and Luke Hemmings, Hood began posting cover songs on YouTube in 2011. The trio eventually added mutual friend Ashton Irwin, forming the pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer. After performing at local venues and continuing to post online videos, the group drew the attention of major record companies, and signed with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. 5 Seconds of Summer went on to release the EPs "Unplugged" and "Somewhere New" in 2012.
