His senior career began at Nacional in 2005, where he played in 34 matches, scoring 12 goals. In 2006, he moved on to Gronigen, playing 37 matches and scoring 15 goals. From there he joined Ajax in 2007, staying with the club until 2011. With Ajax he scored 111 goals in 159 appearances. In 2011, he joined Liverpool. He has also played for Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Grêmio as well as the Uruguay national team. Considered to be one of the greatest strikers in history, Suárez has won a Premier League Golden Boot, two European Golden Shoes, and the Pichichi Trophy.
Early Life
Luis Suárez was born on January 25, 1987 in Salto, Uruguay as the fourth of seven boys of Sandra and Rodolfo. When he was seven years old, he moved with his family to Montevideo; his parents separated a couple years later.
Youth Career
As a child, Suárez played youth football at Sportivo Artigas in Salto. After moving to Montevideo, he played at Urreta. When he was 14, Suárez joined the youth team of local side Nacional. He got into some trouble during this time, including for drinking and partying.
Senior Career, 2005-2010
At the age of 18, Suárez made his first-team debut against Atlético Junior in the Copa Libertadores. He went on to help Nacional win the Uruguayan league for the 2005-06 season. After that, Suárez was scouted and signed by the Dutch club Groningen. Although he scored many goals for the team, he struggled to adjust due to his lack of Dutch-speaking skills; moreover, he ran into many disciplinary problems on the field. In 2007, Suárez was traded to the Dutch club Ajax, which saw great potential in him. The trade paid off, as Suárez began flourishing. In his first season with the team, he scored 17 goals in 33 league appearances. However, he continued to get into disciplinary trouble. In the 2008-09 season, he scored 22 goals in 31 league appearances. The next season was his best yet, as he finished as the Eredivisie's top scorer with 35 goals across 33 matches, and 49 goals in all competitions. Suárez continued his success in the 2010-11 season, during which he scored his 100th goal for Ajax. He got into trouble again, however, when he bit Otman Bakkal on the shoulder during a match in November. Suárez was consequently suspended for seven league matches.
Liverpool
While he was still suspended from Ajax in early 2011, Suárez was traded to Premier League club Liverpool. During his partial first season with the team, he was among its best players. The 2011-12 season was less auspicious for Suárez, despite Liverpool winning the League Cup. That's largely because Suárez was accused of racially abusing Patrice Evra during a match against Manchester United, for which he earned an eight-match suspension. He came back strong for the 2012-13 season, becoming the second-top scorer in the Premier League with 23 goals. However, he also got into another biting incident, this time with Branislav Ivanović as the victim. Suárez received a ten-match ban for the attack.
In March of the 2013-14 season, Suárez made his 100th Premier League appearance in a 3-0 victory over Southampton. He had an incredible season, breaking Robbie Fowler's club record of 28 goals in a single Premier League season. In April, he became the first non-European to win the PFA Player of the Year award. Suárez finished the season with 31 goals, winning the Premier League Golden Boot and sharing the European Golden Shoe with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barcelona
For the 2014-15 season, Suárez signed with Barcelona. However, he missed the first part of the season due to a suspension for having bitten Giorgio Chiellini in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Suárez returned in top form, helping Barcelona win the UEFA Champions League over Juventus. He had another sensational season in 2015-16, leading Barcelona to a second consecutive Spanish championship and Copa del Rey. Suárez also won his second European Golden Shoe and his first Pichichi Trophy. The next season, he helped the team to a third consecutive Copa del Rey. Suárez's playing only got more impressive in 2016-17, when he helped Barcelona to the longest unbeaten streak in the history of La Liga, with 39 consecutive wins. The team went on to win the La Liga title, as well as its fourth consecutive Copa del Rey. Barcelona's unbeaten streak finally came to an end after 43 games. The team won yet another La Liga title in 2019. Suárez's final season with Barcelona in 2020 was mostly disappointing, capped off by a historic 2-8 loss to Bayern in the Champions League quarterfinals.
Atlético Madrid
Suárez moved to Atlético Madrid for the 2020-21 season. He had a cracking start to the season, and went on to score his 500th senior career goal. Suárez continued to dominate throughout the remainder of the season, leading Atlético to its first La Liga title in seven years. He also ended the season as the club's top scorer, with 21 goals. In the 2021-22 season, his final with Atlético, Suárez again finished as the top scorer, this time with 13 goals.
Nacional and Grêmio
In 2022, Suárez returned to his boyhood club Nacional. He was easily able to replicate his prior successes with the team, leading Nacional to the Uruguayan league championship title. Suárez went on to join the Brazilian club Grêmio, making his debut in early 2023.
International Playing
On the international stage, Suárez has played for the Uruguay national team at the FIFA World Cup, Copa América, Summer Olympics, and Confederations Cup. He helped the team win the Copa América in 2011. One of Suárez's most controversial international appearances came at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, when he bit the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. He was consequently banned for nine international matches, ending his World Cup campaign.
Personal Life
When he was 15, Suárez began dating Italian Sofía Balbi. The pair married in 2009, and had a daughter named Delfina in 2010. They later had sons named Benjamin and Lauti.
