Early Life and Education
G. Love, whose real name is Garrett Dutton, was born on October 3, 1972 in the historic Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He got into music early on in life, and started playing the guitar when he was eight. As a teenager, Dutton went to the private Germantown Friends School. During this time, he began performing on the streets of Philadelphia. He went on to attend Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York for a year before dropping out and moving to Boston.
Career Beginnings
In Boston, Dutton worked as a fundraiser for the organization Peace Action; he also continued performing his music in public. He soon met local music producer Tom DeMille, who was interested in finding artists combining traditional blues with modern sounds, which Dutton was doing.
G. Love & Special Sauce
At the Tam O'Shanter, the Boston bar where he regularly performed, Dutton met drummer Jeffrey Clemens in early 1993. They subsequently began performing together, and were eventually joined by bassist Jim Prescott. The trio went on to become the house band at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge, Massachusetts every Monday. It was during this time that Dutton began using the stage name G. Love. Soon, he, Clemens, and Prescott named their band G. Love & Special Sauce.
Via Epic Records, G. Love & Special Sauce released their self-titled debut album in 1994. A solid success, the album launched the single "Cold Beverage," a hit on college radio and MTV. The band toured heavily after this. G. Love & Special Sauce released their second album, "Coast to Coast Motel," in 1995. Following that, the group almost broke up due to finance disputes. A brief hiatus ensued before the band members got back together to record their third album, "Yeah, It's That Easy." Released in 1997, it spawned the minor rock hit "Stepping Stones." G. Love & Special Sauce's next album, "Philadelphonic," came out in 1999. It was followed in 2001 by "Electric Mile," an ambitious album blending blues, funk, soul, and hip hop. Later albums have included "Superhero Brother," "Sugar," "The Juice," and "Philadelphia Mississippi."
