Tamela Mann was born Tamela Jean Johnson on June 9, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas. Tamela and her 13 elder siblings were raised by their mother, who went by "Mother Eppe," and their family belonged to the Church of God in Christ, a Holiness–Pentecostal Christian denomination. By the time she was 12 years old, Mann had begun performing with her church's adult choir, often singing solos. She also sang in her high school's choir.

Tamela married actor David Mann on June 9, 1988, and they have welcomed two children, Tia and David Jr., together. David has starred as Deacon Leroy Brown in several Tyler Perry projects, and Tamela has played his daughter Cora in those projects. The couple has also starred on the reality series "It's a Mann's World" (2015) and "The Manns" (2017). Tamela became an ambassador for WW International (Weight Watchers International) in 2019, and a few months later, she underwent double knee surgery.
