Early Life
Julia Michaels was born Julia Carin Cavazos on November 13, 1993, in Davenport, Iowa. She is the daughter of Julie Scriven and Juan Manuel Cavazos, and her older sister, Jaden, is also a singer-songwriter. Juan changed his name to John Michaels because he wanted to pursue a career as an actor. The family moved to Santa Clarita, California, and Julia started singing when she was 12 years old. Two years later, she met a songwriter named Joleen Belle, and the two would collaborate on many songs for film and television, including the theme song for the Disney Channel series "Austin & Ally." When Michaels was 19, she met songwriter Lindy Robbins, and the two co-wrote Demi Lovato's "Fire Starter" and Fifth Harmony's "Miss Movin' On." At the age of 16, Julia began writing in the Hollywood Pop Circuits, and she met Justin Tranter, her songwriting partner, when she was 20.
