Julie Brown was born on August 27, 1963 in Bedfordshire, England to a British mother and a Jamaican father. She is one of seven siblings. Due to her father's work in the Royal Air Force, Brown grew up on air force bases around the globe. The family eventually settled in Wales.
Career Beginnings
In the late 1970s, Brown won the UK Disco Dancing Championships. She went on to win the World Disco Dancing Championships after that. Subsequently, Brown began appearing on British television as a presenter and guest on children's shows, including BBC's long-running "Crackerjack." She also appeared as a dancer on the BBC music chart program "Top of the Pops." Later, Brown became a presenter on the 24/7 pan-European television channel Music Box.
Club MTV
After moving to the United States in the late 1980s, Brown became a VJ on the television channel MTV. In the summer of 1987, she began hosting the new music show "Club MTV." Modeled on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand," the show was filmed at the New York City dance club the Palladium, and featured teenagers and young adults dancing to hit music videos. Brown's catchphrase on the show was "Wubba Wubba Wubba," which stemmed from her accidental reading of the T-shirt of a camera crewmember who was holding the cue cards. "Club MTV" ultimately ran for 1,245 episodes through mid-1992.
Further Television and Radio Career
After leaving MTV, Brown worked for ESPN as an interviewer of football athletes both on and off the field. Following that gig, she moved to Los Angeles and hosted the gossip program on the cable network E! On the radio, Brown hosted the syndicated dance music countdown program "American Dance Traxx," serving as host from March of 1992 until the show's final broadcast in December of 1993. Later on, she began hosting the SiriusXM channel '90s on 9, which features hit R&B, rock, hip-hop, and dance tracks from the 1990s.
