Matt has an older sister named Margaret who was born in 1950. Claire and J.D. divorced in 1967. Matt and Margret lived with their mother but remained close to their father who actually built a house directly across the street from their mother's new home. He continued living at this home until his death in 2010.
Matt attended North Country School in Keene, New York, followed by Phillips Academy Andover then Princeton, but he graduated from Columbia with dual degrees in drama and art history.

In 1999, his sister wrote a memoir about her childhood called, "Dream Catcher." A few weeks after the book was published, Matt wrote a critical letter to The New York Observer disapproving of his sister's comments regarding their childhood.
Matt married jewelry designer, Betsy Becker, in 1985. They live in Fairfield County, Connecticut with their two sons, Gannon and Avery. They paid $2.45 million for their home in November 2004. Today the 2+ acre property is likely worth $5+ million.
