In 1976, he started Sterlite Industries, a company working in the industrial sector, and later on, in 1986, Agarwal founded Vedanta Resources, which is the first Indian company that has achieved a listing on the London Stock Exchange. Now, the corporation's head office is based in the United Kingdom, and it is the major zinc producer and the second copper producer in the world. Moreover, Agarwal has donated a bulk of money in order to build the Vedanta University in Orissa, India. Currently, "The Metal King" lives a luxurious life in London, together with his wife and two children.

In September 2014, Anil Agarwal announced his intention to join Bill Gates and Warren Buffett's giving pledge. Anil explained that after meeting with Bill Gates, his family decided they would give away 75% of their fortune. At his current wealth level, that amounts to just under $2.5 billion for charity. The Agarwal family will still be worth approximately $825 million. No word yet on what specific areas of philanthropy Anil will be focusing on.
