Early Life
Matthew Modine was born Matthew Avery Modine on March 22, 1959, in Loma Linda, California. His mother, Delores, was a bookkeeper, and his father, Mark, managed drive-in movie theaters. Modine grew up with six older siblings, and his brother Mark appeared in Matthew's 1992 film "Equinox." Modine's family lived in several different locations in Utah, and they later returned to California, settling in Imperial Beach. Matthew attended Mar Vista High School, graduating in 1977.
Career
Modine made his TV debut in the 1982 "ABC Afterschool Special" episode "Amy & the Angel," and in 1983, he appeared in the films "Baby It's You," "Private School," and "Streamers." He played the title role in 1984's "Birdy," and in 1985, he starred as Louden Swain in "Vision Quest" and appeared in the Madonna music videos "Crazy for You" and "Gambler," which were from the film's soundtrack. Matthew portrayed Private/Sergeant J.T. "Joker" Davis in 1987's "Full Metal Jacket," and in 1988, he starred in "Married to the Mob" and "The Gamble" and hosted "Saturday Night Live." While working as a cook and struggling to break through in acting, Matthew met the woman who would become his wife, Caridad Rivera. They married on October 31, 1980, and they welcomed son Boman on November 8, 1985, and daughter Ruby on July 31, 1990. Ruby is an actress and singer, and Boman is a writer, director and producer.
Real Estate
In 2012 Matthew and his wife Caridad paid $2.45 million for a loft in Venice, California. Around the time of purchase they listed their NYC duplex for $2.3 million. He purchased the NYC property in 2008 for $1.73 million.
In November 2021 Matthew and Caridad sold the Venice, California home for $4 million.
