Early Life

Labrinth, whose real name is Timothy Lee McKenzie, was born on January 4, 1989 in London, England as one of nine siblings. He is of Jamaican descent. Growing up, he and his siblings formed a band called Mac 9. McKenzie was educated at Stoke Newington School, where he began pursuing his career in music. At the age of 15, he was introduced to studio recording by his brother Mac.

Career Beginnings

McKenzie, now going by the stage name Labrinth, got his start in the music industry as a co-producer on Master Shortie's 2009 album "A.D.H.D." His work drew the attention of EMI Music Publishing executive Guy Moot, who offered him a deal with the company. Labrinth subsequently served as a mentor to the Urban Development Vocal Collective, many of whose tracks he produced.

Rise to Fame

Labrinth had his breakthrough year in 2010. In February, he appeared as an uncredited guest on rapper Tinie Tempah's number-one hit debut single "Pass Out," which he also produced and co-wrote. Later in the year, Labrinth reunited with Tempah as a featured artist on the single "Frisky," which debuted at number two in the UK. Throughout 2010, Labrinth also wrote material for such artists as Loick Essien and Professor Green.
