Jim Jordan is an American Republican politician and former wrestler who has a net worth of $200,000 according to his most recent congressional financial disclosure. In previous years, Jim Jordan's net worth has been as high as $240,000.
Early Life
Jim Daniel Jordan was born in Urbana, Ohio, on February 17, 1964. He is the son of Shirley and John Jordan. He wrestled at Graham High School winning state championships in all four years while compiling a 156-1 record. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned his MA from Ohio State University and his JD from Capital University. While enrolled at Wisconsin-Madison, he became a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion winning the 1985 and 1986 NCAA championship matches in the 134-pound weight class.
Political Career
Jordan served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from the 85th district from January 1995 to December 2000. From January 2001 to December 2006, he served as a member of the Ohio Senate from the 12th district. Jim Jordan became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio's 4th district in January 2007. He became the Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee in January 2019. Jordan is also a founding member of the Freedom Caucus and chaired it from 2015 to 2017.
Political Positions
Republican Jim Jordan is known as one of Congress' most conservative members. He has consistently voted for anti-abortion legislation and was endorsed by Ohio Right to Life. He was the first member of Congress to sign the "No Climate Tax" draft in 2008 and introduced legislation in 2009 to block the District of Columbia from recognizing same-sex marriages. In 2015, he cosponsored a resolution to amend the US Constitution to ban same-sex marriage and condemned the Supreme Court ruling in "Obergefell vs. Hodges" that stated same-sex marriage bans violated the constitution.
Ohio State Controversy
Jim Jordan is not only a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion, but he was an assistant wrestling coach between 1987 and 1995 at Ohio State University. Decades later, it would be revealed that during his time as assistant coach, more than 50 members of the wrestling team were sexually assaulted by the team's doctor, Richard Strauss. The major question is what, if anything, Jim Jordan knew of the assaults. Jordan has repeatedly denied knowing about the assaults, however several anonymous former wrestlers and one referrer have told police that they'd made Jordan aware of the situation. Wrestlers who did not complain directly to Jordan claim that he had to have known that wrestlers were being assaulted and that it was an open secret among the team.
Personal Life
Jim Jordan and his wife, Polly, live near Urbana in central Champaign County in Ohio. The two were introduced by her brothers who competed in wrestling with Jim. Jim and Polly started dating when they were 13 and 14, respectively. Today, they have four children together and two grandchildren. Jim also has a son-in-law, Jarrod Uthoff, who is a professional basketball player.
