What Is Tobey Maguire's Net Worth and Salary?

Tobey Maguire is an American actor and film producer who has a net worth of $75 million. Tobey Maguire is probably best known for playing Spider-Man in three blockbuster films. The three "Spider-Man" films, which were directed by Sam Raimi, were a precursor to the current trend towards blockbuster films based on superhero comic book characters. The first "Spider-Man" film earned $820 million, while "Spider-Man 2" took in $784 million, and "Spider-Man 3" grossed the most in the series with $890 million.

The success of the "Spider-Man" franchise made Tobey one of the highest-paid actors in the world in the 2000s, with his upfront movie paychecks routinely topping $15 million. Maguire has mostly done smaller movies since then, and these three films constitute the bulk of his box office take as a leading man.

Tobey Maguire Salary Highlights

As you might expect, Tobey's biggest big-screen paydays have come from playing Spider-Man. In 2002, he earned a respectable $4 million to play the superhero, but for the sequels, he made considerably more – in "Spider-Man 2," he negotiated a salary of $17.5 million, plus five percent of the film's box office gross. Then, for the final installment, "Spider-Man 3," he got a slightly smaller salary of $15 million but with an even larger piece of the backend, at 7.5 percent. One other payday in the "Spider-Man" range was the $12.5 million he made for "Seabiscuit."

Early Life

Tobey Maguire was born on June 27th, 1975, in Santa Monica, California. His introduction to the industry came early, perhaps thanks to his mother, Wendy, who worked as a screenwriter and movie producer. Maguire has said that in his childhood, his original ambition was to be a professional chef (his father, Vincent, worked as a cook). However, in sixth grade, when Tobey expressed a desire to enroll in a home economics class, his mother paid him $100 to enroll in drama, wishing him to follow in her own footsteps instead. To say the least, the hundred bucks paid off since Maguire pursued acting even after he dropped out of high school and went on to his well-known successes in the field.

Movie Career

Maguire's acting career began back in 1989 when he was just 14 years old. For the next several years, his boyish appearance led him to specialize in significantly younger roles, including in a variety of television commercials as well as programs like "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Roseanne," and the short-lived FOX TV series "Great Scott!" During this early part of his career, Maguire became friends with a young actor named Leonardo DiCaprio, and the two formed a kind of professional pact to help each other get work. This pact paid big dividends for Maguire, starting with a guest spot on the 1990 TV series "Parenthood," on which DiCaprio had a starring role. A similar casting dynamic recurred in the 1993 film "This Boy's Life."

Maguire continued to see his star rise throughout the mid-1990s, eventually landing a major role in the 1997 film "The Ice Storm," directed by Ang Lee. This led to other leading roles in such films as "Pleasantville," "The Cider House Rules," and "Wonder Boys." He was also seen in a supporting role in the 1998 movie "Fear and "Loathing in Las Vegas" by director Terry Gilliam. A few years later, Tobey landed what would become his signature role: Peter Parker, the teenage alter-ego of the superhero Spider-Man. Other notable films Maguire starred in during this period include "Seabiscuit" (on which he also served as producer) and "The Good German."

After the end of the "Spider-Man" series with "Spider-Man 3" in 2007, Maguire continued to work as an actor and producer, including a memorable cameo in the 2008 comedy "Tropic Thunder." In 2009, he demonstrated his more serious acting chops in the war drama remake "Brothers," for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. Then in 2013, he reunited with his old friend Leonardo DiCaprio in the film adaptation of "The Great Gatsby." In 2015, he played chess prodigy Bobby Fischer in "Pawn Sacrifice," and in 2017, he voiced a character in the animated film "Boss Baby." Maguire reprised his role as Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the film "Spider-Man: No Way Home" alongside successors Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield in 2021.

Personal Life

In 2003, Maguire met jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer on the set of "Seabiscuit." They married in 2007. The couple separated after almost a decade of marriage, and after four years of separation, Meyer filed for divorce in 2020. The couple has two children, one son and one daughter.

Maguire has been a vegetarian since 1992 and vegan since 2009. He dramatically cut calorie intake for his role in "Seabiscuit" and then implemented a rapid increase to regain weight for "Spider-Man 2."

The other major development of Maguire's personal life happened in 2004, when he discovered a knack for tournament poker, becoming a protege of professional player Daniel Negreanu and winning money at several events, even competing in televised World Series of Poker championships as well as the notorious high-stakes games organized by Molly Bloom in the mid-2000s. If you've seen the fictionalized film version of these games in the 2017 film "Molly's Game," you might be familiar with some of Maguire's behavior during these games since the character, played by Michael Cera, is reportedly based in part on him, among other famous regular players of Bloom's games.

Real Estate

In 2019, Tobey spent a reported $6.9 million 3,526-square-foot mansion in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. In the years prior, he made other celeb real estate headlines too, listing a vacant lot also in Brentwood in 2018 and selling a small compound in Santa Monica to "Million Dollar Decorator" Kathy Ireland for $3.325 million in the early part of 2017. He sold the vacant lot for $10.7 million in 2021 after paying $10 million in 2008. Maguire listed it for $14.25 million in 2018 before reducing the price to $11 million in the summer. The year before that, he was reported to have purchased yet another Brentwood property "on spec" for $13 million.

In October 2020, Tobey listed a home in West Hollywood, California, for $4.2 million. He paid $3.4 million for the home two years earlier.
