Early Life
Robin Rene Roberts was born on November 23rd, 1960, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her father, Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts, was once a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen. She was raised in Mississippi in a household that stressed the importance of discipline, determination, and religion. She graduated from high school as the class salutatorian before attending Southeastern Louisiana University.
She had been offered a basketball scholarship at Lousiana State, but she declined. However, she went on to become a major star on the basketball team of Southeastern Louisiana University and was their third-top-scorer by the time she graduated in 1983 cum laude with a degree in communication.
Career
Robin Roberts chose to pursue a career in journalism after graduating from college, as she wanted to follow in the footsteps of an older sister who was an established journalist by that point. In 1983, she put her athletic experience to good use when she became a sports anchor for a local news network in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. For the next three years, she acted in similar capacities for networks in Biloxi, Nashville, and Georgia.
After gaining valuable experience and working her way up the ladder to bigger networks, Robin Roberts was offered a position at ESPN as a sportscaster in 1990. Roberts subsequently appeared on "SportsCenter" until 2005. During this period, she also began to appear on ABC's "Good Morning America" from time to time. Eventually, she was promoted to co-anchor for "Good Morning America," collaborating well with George Stephanopoulos to help increase the show's ratings. Soon enough, "Good Morning America" was the number-one-rated morning show in America.
2005 was a year filled with ups and downs for Roberts as she delivered reports from the site of Hurricane Katrina. She even visited her hometown and discovered that her high school had been completely destroyed.
In 2009 and 2011, she hosted the Academy Awards pre-show for ABC. In 2018, she co-anchored ABC's coverage of the wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Outside of news broadcasting, Robin Roberts made a guest appearance on an episode of "Hannah Montana."
Health Issues
Robin Roberts has struggled with a number of health issues over the course of her life. In 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and received surgical, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments. In 2012, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, otherwise known as MDS. The illness required her to receive a bone marrow transplant, and Roberts had to take a leave of absence from "Good Morning America" to receive treatment. The transplant was successful, and she returned to work in 2013.
Relationships
Roberts made her sexual orientation known to the public for the first time in 2013 when she announced her relationship with a woman named Amber Laign, although those close to her were aware that she was in same-sex relationships much earlier. Roberts began her relationship with Laign in 2005.
Real Estate
In 2005, it was reported that Robin Roberts had purchased an apartment in New York City for $2.575 million. Situated in Trump Place, the luxury apartment was a noticeable step up for Roberts, who had previously been renting in a West End rental tower.
