John Oscar Utendahl was born in Queens, New York on May 6, 1957. He graduated from Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus and then earned his MBA from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business.
He worked for Salomon and Merrill Lynch as a bond trader. Until it went out of business, he ran the most successful investment bank run by a minority in the United States. In 2010 Utendahl Capital partners went out of business. John owns a minority stake-holder in Utendahl Capital Management.
In 1994, John was the commencement speaker at the University of Denver. Through his speech he befriended a graduating senior named Robert F. Smith. Smith was intending to pursue a career in marketing, but on John's advice moved to New York City and started a career in finance. He even helped Smith get his first job at Goldman Sachs. Today Robert is a multi-billionaire thanks to Vista Equity Partners, and is generally considered the richest black person in America.
He became Vice Chairman of Deutsche Bank Americas in March 2010. In September 2015 he was poached by Bank of America Merrill Lynch to be a senior banker for the firm. According to an internal memo published at the time of his hiring, John was hired to be BofA's executive vice chairman of global and investment banking. He retired from Bank of America in February 2023.
John became somewhat well-known outside of the finance world in the early 2010s when he dated model/actress/host Tyra Banks. More recently he has been linked to Russian pop singer Radmila Lolly. The two frequently attend NBA games together, with Radmila typically wearing outrageous outfits court-side. He has two daughters from a previous marriage to Phyllis Hollis.
