Early Life and Career
Dustin Poirier was born on January 19, 1989 in Lafayette, Louisiana to parents of Acadian French descent. As a teenager, he attended Northside High School for a brief period of time before dropping out due to repeated street-fighting skirmishes.
Career Beginnings
In 2009, Poirier became a professional MMA fighter. Competing predominantly in regional promotions throughout Louisiana and the Southern US, he compiled an impressive 7-0 record in short order. Poirier suffered his first defeat in his World Extreme Cagefighting debut in 2010, losing to Danny Castillo by unanimous decision. Later in the year, he bounced back by defeating Zach Micklewright via TKO at WEC 52.
Ultimate Fighting Championship, 2011-2017
After World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in late 2010, Poirier began competing in the UFC. He made his debut in the promotion on New Year's Day in 2011, stepping in for the injured José Aldo in a match against Josh Grispi. Poirier ultimately won the fight. He went on to defeat Jason Young, Pablo Garza, and Max Holloway. In May of 2012, Poirier was beaten by Chan Sung Jung in a match that earned Fight of the Night honors. Closing out the year, Poirier defeated Jonathan Brookins. In his first fight of 2013, he fell to Cub Swanson. Poirier came back strong in his next bout to beat Erik Koch. At the end of 2013, he defeated Diego Brandão via knockout. The next year, Poirier had a strong win over Akira Corassani, earning him his second Fight of the Night bonus. However, in his next match, he lost via TKO to Conor McGregor. Following that loss, he moved up in weight class to the lightweight division.
In his first lightweight bout in 2015, Poirier defeated Carlos Diego Ferreira via knockout in the first round and claimed Performance of the Night honors. He next beat Yancy Medeiros via TKO in the first round and earned another Performance of the Night bonus. Kicking off 2016, Poirier beat Joseph Duffy. Later, in June, he beat Bobby Green at UFC 199. In September, Poirier was defeated by Michael Johnson. His next fight, in early 2017, was a vicious match against Jim Miller, whom he ultimately beat while sustaining serious injuries. After recovering, he faced Eddie Alvarez in a bout that was declared a no contest. In his final fight of the year in November, Poirier beat Anthony Pettis via TKO.
Ultimate Fighting Championship, 2018-2022
After signing a new contract with the UFC, Poirier faced Justin Gaethje in April of 2018; he ultimately won the bout via TKO. Next, he had a rematch against Eddie Alvarez, whom he also beat via TKO. In his first fight of 2019, Poirier went up against UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway for the title of Interim UFC Lightweight Champion. He emerged victorious in the back-and-forth match, winning by unanimous decision and snapping Holloway's 13-fight winning streak. Poirier next faced undefeated UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242, losing in the third round via submission.
One of Poirier's most thrilling matches came in June of 2020 against Dan Hooker. It was a back-and-forth fight that ended with Poirier winning by unanimous decision and earning his seventh career Fight of the Night title. Early in 2021, Poirier fought in a rematch against Conor McGregor; unlike the first time, he won the bout, making him the first person to defeat McGregor via knockout in MMA. Poirier went up against McGregor again that summer, winning once again via knockout. Ending the year, he competed for the UFC Lightweight Championship by facing Charles Oliveira, who ultimately defeated him. Poirier had better luck with his 2022 victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 281.
